Follow Type Explained Dofollow, Nofollow, Sponsored & UGC
Follow type shows how a backlink is marked, not whether it has quality. This note explains how dofollow, nofollow, sponsored and UGC appear in a backlink audit, why live URL checks matter, and how follow attributes fit into pre-index backlink audit and post-index backlink audit review.
Follow type is a link attribute not a quality verdict
Dofollow, nofollow, sponsored and UGC describe how a backlink is marked. They do not prove backlink quality, safety or value on their own. This note explains how follow type should be read in a backlink audit, why live URL checks matter, and how to avoid wrong disavow links decisions from attribute-only thinking.
What follow type is
Follow type is the attribute classification of a confirmed backlink. It is useful in both a pre-index backlink audit and a post-index backlink audit, but it should never replace full backlink quality review.
Attributes do not guarantee value
A dofollow backlink can still be weak if the page is irrelevant, unstable, blocked or full of manipulation patterns. A nofollow backlink can still be a real placement that belongs in the audit context. Follow type is one signal, not the full decision.
How to check backlinks quality after follow type is known
After the attribute is known, check the placement context, topical fit, language match, indexability, source patterns and toxic backlink signals. This is where a backlink audit separates real value from attribute-based assumptions.
What each means
These definitions describe how the backlink is marked on the live URL. They do not say whether the backlink should be kept, reviewed or escalated.
Dofollow
Dofollow means the backlink is not explicitly marked as nofollow, sponsored or UGC. It can pass signals by default, but only if the placement is viable, relevant, stable and not showing strong toxic backlink signals.
Nofollow
Nofollow means the backlink exists but is marked with a nofollow attribute. It is not the same as a missing backlink. It still deserves context review, especially when the placement is relevant, stable and useful to the target audience.
Sponsored
Sponsored means the backlink is marked as paid, sponsored or promotional. It explains link intent, not final quality. A sponsored backlink still needs review for placement context, source quality, patterns and policy risk.
UGC
UGC means user-generated content, often comments, forums, profiles or community sections. It describes the placement environment. It should be reviewed alongside spam patterns, topical fit and whether the backlink is useful or risky.
What it does not mean
Most follow-type mistakes come from treating attributes as shortcuts. A backlink audit should never decide quality, risk or disavow action from the attribute alone.
Dofollow does not mean safe or valuable
A dofollow backlink can still be low quality, off-topic, technically blocked or part of a manipulation footprint. Dofollow answers how the link is marked. It does not answer whether the backlink should be trusted.
Nofollow does not mean “not real”
Nofollow is an attribute on an existing backlink. It can still matter as a placement, referral source, brand signal or context signal. Treat it with the same evidence lens: stability, relevance, patterns and risk indicators.
Sponsored is not an automatic disavow
Sponsored is an intent label. It does not automatically mean the backlink belongs in a disavow links file. Disavow review should be reserved for stronger harmful patterns, not every paid or promotional attribute.
UGC does not automatically mean spam
UGC can be low quality, but the attribute alone is not enough. The audit should still check source context, link placement, language fit, topical relevance and whether toxic backlink signals are actually present.
Common mistakes
These are the mistakes that cause poor triage, wasted review time and wrong cleanup decisions after a Verify Backlinks audit.
Using follow type as the only quality filter
“Only dofollow” ignores topical fit, indexability traps, rendering instability and manipulation patterns. It is a common way to scale backlinks that pass one attribute check but fail real backlink quality review.
What to do next
Once follow type is interpreted correctly, move through the audit in the right order: state first, quality context second, risk labels third, final decision last.
