Error means the URL could not be checked reliably
An error state means the page could not be fetched or verified with enough confidence. Before judging backlink quality, the URL needs a reachability review. A failed fetch is not the same as a missing backlink or a nofollow backlink.
No link means the backlink was not found
No link means the live URL was checked, but the expected backlink was not confirmed. This is usually a recheck, recovery, replacement or vendor QA issue — not an automatic toxic backlink check or disavow links issue.
Nofollow means the backlink exists with an attribute
Nofollow is not a missing-link state. The backlink is present, but marked with a follow attribute. It still needs context review: placement, topical fit, language fit, indexability and quality signals still matter.
Error
Error states are reliability problems. They tell you the live URL check could not produce enough evidence to confirm the backlink state. In a backlink audit, that means the page should be reviewed for reachability before the link is judged.
Error is a verification problem, not a backlink verdict
If the page returns an HTTP problem, times out or blocks access, the backlink cannot be confirmed properly. Treat it as unstable evidence until the page can be checked again. Do not treat every error as toxic or as a disavow candidate.
No link
No link is the clearest missing-placement state. The page may load, but the expected backlink is not confirmed. A no link result should be separated from error, nofollow and toxic backlink signals.
A URL in a spreadsheet is not proof of a backlink
Vendor files, outreach exports and tool downloads can list URLs that no longer contain the backlink. A live URL check turns the claim into evidence. If the backlink is not found, it should not be counted as delivered value.
Nofollow
Nofollow is a link attribute, not a missing placement. The backlink exists, but how much value it carries depends on context, quality and risk signals. This is why nofollow should not be grouped with no link or error.
